“Yoga is a mood management strategy for First Responders."
Ralph Griffith, Ph.D., Lenior Rhyne associate professor
Center for Graduate Studies of Columbia, SC - Lenoir-Rhyne University
“This is a very valuable opportunity for veterans and other first responders,” said Ralph Griffith, Ph.D., LR associate professor. “Creative alternatives to relieve the stress associated with repeated trauma makes a huge difference in the lives of Sharon’s clients.” Griffith started the Center for Commercial and Social Entrepreneurship and Innov828 Business Incubator programs at the Hickory campus. Both programs help students develop their ideas into viable ventures, and he is helping Johnson work toward developing Yogi Cubs into a nonprofit organization.
“Her project overlaps both areas and is a great example of how innovation and hard work can make the world a better place,” he said.
Comment from City of Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins
“Each day our firefighters handle a lot of stressful situations helping the public, which can wear on their bodies and minds. Any opportunity they have to rejuvenate not only can help them but also the many people we serve.”

I do see that it can be a calming technique, we just need to find the time to use it. In the job that can go from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds, we don't always have the opportunity to pull over and find our inner being.

The Yogi Cubs Program, consistently delivered exceptional services to the children at our center. This program has been an invaluable addition to our offerings, enriching the experiences of our young participants through engaging yoga games, educational sessions on yoga poses, and a commendable commitment to program consistency. The Yogi Cubs Program's innovative approach to introducing yoga to children has been a highlight of our daycare's activities. The incorporation of fun and interactive yoga games not only captures the children's interest but also instills a love for physical well-being from an early age. One of the program's notable strengths lies in its educational component, where youth are provided with a comprehensive understanding of various yoga poses. This educational focus goes beyond the physical aspects of yoga, fostering mindfulness and relaxation among our daycare participants. Moreover, I would like to highlight the Yogi Cubs Program's consistency in serving our daycare since February 2023. The team behind the program has demonstrated reliability and dedication in delivering quality sessions, contributing to the overall positive atmosphere of our childcare environment. The After-School Zone Academy recommends the Yogi Cubs Program, as its engaging approach to yoga through fun games, educational content, and consistent delivery has proven to be an invaluable and enriching experience.
